Bernard Arnault, CEO of the French luxury group LVMH, was elected a member of France’s prestigious Academy of Moral and Political Sciences this week – an accolade that was clearly more political than moral.
Five days earlier, Arnault had appeared in court to testify in a case involving a man who served as head of France’s domestic intelligence agency before being hired by LVMH as a security consultant and allegedly conducting illegal surveillance for the group.
The two events highlight the complexity of Europe’s richest man and at times the world’s richest, depending on the performance of LVMH shares.
