China’s call for “common prosperity” and fears of a crackdown on high-income earners pushed luxury stocks down by 10-15 percent in August on concerns Beijing’s populist rhetoric and reforms could stifle the country’s booming luxury goods market. Luxury executives and China experts told Miss Tweed they believed the stock market had overreacted to the news. They did not expect the country’s avalanche of social and economic measures to have any strong impact on demand for high-end products and brands.
