Hermès this week became the world’s most valuable luxury brand when its market capitalisation surpassed that of the behemoth LVMH. One brand, Hermès, was briefly worth more than LVMH’s more than 80 brands together. This development speaks volumes about the fact that Hermès is regarded by consumers as the industry’s only true luxury brand, while many of LVMH’s brands describe themselves as luxury but their value for money, exclusivity and timelessness do not match those of Hermès. The French brand, founded in 1837, is known for its hard-to-find Kelly and Birkin handbags, which fetch more than €9,000.
